What is Visionary Disciple Making?

Visionary Disciple Making is designed to provide help for pastors and church leaders as they seek to answer their questions about how to fulfill the mission and vision of their own church. It is set in the context of:

  • developing ownership among the people by involving them in the development of the church’s mission and vision;

  • engaging them in significant ministry experiences in the ministries and programs of the local church;

  • developing them towards spiritual maturity as they serve in the trenches of ministry; and

  • empowering them to serve with passion by helping them to minister in the setting that best fits them.
Why Visionary Disciple Making?

Many pastors and church leaders have invested a lot of effort in developing their church’s mission and vision, and have carefully crafted statements that reflect their highest ideals. But once that process is complete and it is presented to the congregation, there may be some initial excitement, but usually things do not change much in how the church operates.

That is a problem. No matter how good the vision of the church and its leaders may be, it will not be effective if it does not impact the church and its people to the extent that the church moves forward with a focused direction for its ministries, and it provides significant ministry experiences for its people as they mature and develop in their own personal walks with God.

It is as if the leaders have some very good plans in their hands, but are overwhelmed with how to implement them into the life and ministries of their church. Perhaps most frustrating for these church leaders is not knowing how to engage and develop their disciples in such a life changing venture, and not seeing significant progress towards the fulfillment of their church’s vision. Many pastors and church leaders seldom see the direct connection that naturally exists between vision development and disciple making.

How Does Visionary Discipleship Work?

Visionary Disciple Making is a multi-step process. The Vision Journey, which is the process used by the Vision Explosion Company to develop the church’s disciples, makes that connection by creating ownership in the church’s vision as people are involved in the process of developing it themselves. It will also guide their people to find the place of ministry that fits them best, and will lead the church in providing a proper format for the training and support of their people as they fulfill the church’s vision. Thus vision development and disciple making are combined as the church fulfills its mission mandate.

What Will Visionary Disciple Making Accomplish?

Simply put, Visionary Disciple Making will help the church to accomplish its dual purpose of doing ministry, and making and maturing its disciples. Whatever the particular vision of the church may be, the church needs people to fulfill that vision. But not just any people.

It needs people who will serve with passion, compassion, skill, faithfulness, and with a sense of calling. It needs people who do not easily burn out or become frustrated because they are not in a ministry area that fits them well. It needs a proper format to help their people develop spiritually, and to resolve issues in their own lives. It needs the opportunity for their people to embrace new challenges with the expectation of significant ministry expansion. It needs people who are seeing results for their efforts. It needs to see new people enter the Kingdom of God, become involved in their own discipleship efforts, and become fruitful in Kingdom service.

Our Lord’s commission to go into all the world to make and develop disciples is best fulfilled as the church engages those disciples in accomplishing the church’s vision. But it does not happen automatically. The Vision Journey employs a proven process to produce what an appreciative pastor called “turbo-charged discipleship.” That process is the core of Visionary Disciple Making, and will guide the church in fulfilling its mission mandate.

Where Is God in Visionary Disciple Making?

God has already assigned a certain mission mandate to each church, which is based on the Great Commission. That mission mandate is individualized for each church while still staying true to our Lord’s command. Once the church’s mission mandate is established, its vision will be developed within the context of each church’s local situation, circumstances, opportunities, area of interest, and ministry resources. The Holy Spirit is instrumental throughout, both in the planning development and in the people development processes, by providing guidance and enablement for each step of the Vision Journey.

Pastors have a passion to see their people mature as they become engaged in significant ministry experiences, as well as for the effectiveness of their churches as they fulfill the Great Commission. While there are seven steps involved in the Vision Journey, there are three major tracks to help the church accomplish these objectives, and can easily be identified as VDM (Vision, Discipleship, and Maturity) development:

  • Vision development with input by both the church leaders and the congregation;

  • Discipleship development through ownership, enlistment, deployment, training, and serving in appropriate and significant ministry experiences of the church; and

  • Maturity development of the disciples as they are actively engaged in fulfilling the church’s vision.
